An x86_64 architecture system
Minimum of two CPU cores, 8GB RAM,
At least 500MB of free disk space (for the software to install).
We define the term SciDB “instance” to mean a single SciDB process, optionally coupled with a sentinel process. A SciDB *cluster* consists of one or more instances. Our recommended hardware configuration *per instance* is:
- 2 CPU cores
- 8GB or more RAM
- one spinning disk for storage
That last bullet point is less important when flash storage is used or in the context SAN storage.
These are guidelines and there are situations that merit different ratios depending upon the number of users you need to support. Contact us for assistance in tuning your configuration.
More than one instance can run per physical computer within those limits. The more instances you run, the faster most operations go because SciDB scales out work across them.
E.g., we would run internally on something that looks like this:
4 off-the shelf servers, each having:
- 128GB RAM
- 16 CPU Cores
- 8 – 7200 RPM Disks
- 1Gb ethernet interconnect
- Ubuntu 14.04 or Centos 6
